POEMI 's philosophy is to create functional, durable and timeless objects, designed to be used for a long period of time. We believe that waste can be reduced by making smarter buying decisions.

POEMI is committed to creating high quality products, but what sets us apart is our commitment to sustainability. We are constantly improving our processes to minimise waste, so we fully recycle the ceramic tableware and glazes that result from the production process and reuse them to create new products and glazes. Furthermore, we have developed our own glaze that contains only recycled ingredients in which we have also integrated wood ash, which we collect from the community where we live.

What do you need to know about POEMI products? 

• They are handcrafted from stoneware fired at high temperature; they are resistant and durable;
• are glazed with organic glazes without lead or cadmium content, food safe;
• They can be washed in the dishwasher and can be used in the microwave;
• are carefully packaged in individual boxes filled with wood wool or honeycomb paper for safe transportation;
• Cracked or broken objects can be repaired at home using the Japanese Kintsugi technique (available on the site) and will be just as resilient and functional.

How do we handcraft POEMI products?

The production process is complex and lasts for about four weeks, needing all our attention and care. The stoneware, similar to plasticine, is stretched in thin strips, cut according to certain patterns and shaped to obtain the desired final shape. After being cut and finished, the items are left to dry, until they are ready to be put into the oven.

Next, the first firing, named bisque firing, follows, in special electrical kilns, at temperatures between 950 and 1000 Celsius degrees . A single firing cycle lasts for approximately 48 hours.

After the bisque firing, the items are glazed and a second firing cycle follows, at temperatures that vary between 1200 and 1800 Celsius degrees, depending on the stoneware and the type of glaze. 

A third firing at a temperature of 800 Celsius degrees is necessary when the items are decorated with colloidal gold or copper luster.

How to take care of POEMI products?

•  Wash the products with hot water and detergent before the first use to remove dust and other residues during transport.
• Even if the stoneware is a durable material, we recommend that you carefully place the dishes in the sink or dishwasher and not to hustle them.
• If the unglazed part comes into contact with foods / drinks / sauces that can stain, we recommend that you wash the wares immediately to avoid staining them on long term.
• Certain types of cutlery may leave gray marks on the white glaze. It is not a flaw in the glazing process or an indicator of its poor quality (all POEMI products are fired at high temperatures). Although it is unpleasant, it is a normal chemical process. The marks left by cutlery may be cleaned with powdered dishwashing detergent. A mixture of lemon with baking powder is also effective.
